CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Skills
This qualification has been given NCPS Recognised Qualification CPCAB CSK-L2 status by the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).
This qualification has been assessed and deemed to have met the standards expected for introduction level training for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
This qualification forms an important part of a progression route in counselling training, but on its own, it does not allow a graduate to practice as a qualified counsellor, gain entry to an Accredited Register or refer to themselves as ‘a specialist’ in the subject matter unless they have other qualifications/training to support this.
About the Course
In this course you will learn how to use listening and counselling skills for a variety of different contexts either in the workplace or in volunteering. You will learn practical skills and competencies to be able to use counselling skills ethically and safely to help others as part of the first stage in professional counselling training. You will also learn a great deal about yourself.
Who is it for?
This qualification is for:
• Those who are embarking on the first level of training as a professional counsellor;
• Those who want to learn counselling skills to help others in a variety of contexts and roles;
• Those who want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development.
What will I do on this course?
The course is ‘experiential’, this means you learn by ‘doing’. You will learn by working together with your peers, your tutors as well as in personal study.
The seven learning outcomes:
1. Use counselling skills ethically and safely
2. Establish and sustain the boundaries of the helping role
3. Work empathically as a helper
4. Focus on the helpee’s needs and concerns
5. Use self awareness in helping work
6. Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction
7. Use feedback and reflection to enhance counselling skills
How is the course assessed?
Students will experience a variety of assessment methods designed to support their experience on the course. These include journal writing, taped assignment, personal reflection and practical skills assessments.
Entry Requirements
There are no requirements for previous training, though you must be 19 years of age.

Progression
The course achieves 17 learning Credits and is entered on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
Progression can be to the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies.
