CYP LEVEL 5 DIPLOMA – BLENDED (120 hours)
Introduction to Working with Children & Young People
About the Course
This is a blended learning course over eight months which leads to a nationally regulated qualification awarded by the CPCAB. The Level 5 Diploma qualification is designed to give candidates the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a counsellor with children and young people aged 11-18. The training includes how to:
• Work safely, legally and ethically with children and young people
• Tailor the therapeutic work to meet the age, development stage and ability of the child or young person
• Use theory, research and skills to work effectively with children and young people
• Work collaboratively, creatively and flexibly with children and young people.
This qualification will enable you to work as a counsellor with this age group in a range of career settings including in a school or college, an agency which specialises in counselling children and young people or as a youth or outreach worker in the community.
Who is it for?
The Level 5 Diploma is for:
• experienced, qualified counsellors (post level 4)
• counsellors who are already counselling CYP and would like a formal qualification, and
• counsellors who would like to develop their practice to include working with CYP.
The CPCAB and Cara Counselling Training recommends that applicants are over the age of twenty-five.

How will I be assessed?
• Learning reviews
• 1 self-review
• 2 written assignments (3,000 to 3,500 words)
• A client record (minimum of 60 one-to-one hours)
• Clinical supervision reports (one after 30 hours and one after 60 hours of client work)
• A personal counselling record (minimum of 20 hours by the end of the course)
• A review of a 15 minute transcript of clinical work
• Feedback on your counselling practice sessions
• A case presentation
• Tutorial records
• Group presentation
Entry Requirements
Qualified at level 4 or above.
Additional Requirements
A minimum of 20 hours personal counselling undertaken during the lifetime of the course.
A minimum of 60 hours formally contracted counselling (one-to-one), with children and young people. The hours are to include client assessment and practice work with at least 4 different clients between the ages of 11-18.
Either group or one-to-one supervision – as per the supervision ratio requirements of the candidate’s chosen ethical framework or professional membership association.
